  • What is my tolerance threshold for different FODMAPs? How much FODMAPs can I consume per day? You may have these questions in mind but find them hard to manage.

With the latest update in the FoodMarble App, we introduce a new feature to help you better understand your recommended daily allowance of FODMAPs – the RDA Ring.

What is RDA?

RDA, or Recommended Daily Allowance, is the daily nutrient intake needed to meet the needs of most healthy people. In the context of FODMAPs, the RDA represents your daily budget for these specific carbohydrates, helping you stay within tolerable limits to decrease the risk of suffering from digestive discomforts.

Why Do We Care About RDA of FODMAPs?

FODMAPs are a variety of different hard-to-digest components found in many foods. Common examples are fructose (found in fruits and honey), lactose (found in dairy products), sorbitol (found in various berries, stone fruits, sugar free foods) and inulin (found in wheat, garlic, onions). These substances can be challenging for some people to digest, leading to fermentation in the gut and resulting in uncomfortable symptoms.

The Role of RDA in Managing FODMAP Intake

The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of FODMAPs provides a guideline on the amount of these carbohydrates a person can consume while reducing the risk of triggering digestive symptoms. By following the RDA, you can better manage your FODMAP intake, keeping it within the limits your gut can handle. This helps prevent symptoms like bloating, gas, and abdominal pain, which are commonly associated with high FODMAP consumption.

Benefits of Tracking RDA for FODMAPs

Symptom Management: Keeping FODMAP intake within the recommended limits helps reduce the frequency and severity of digestive symptoms. This is particularly beneficial for those with IBS and SIBO. In the FoodMarble Program, you can use RDA rings to track and maintain your FODMAP intake within your personal budget, providing relief from uncomfortable symptoms.

Improved Digestive Health: By managing FODMAP intake within your tolerance level, you can maintain a healthier balance in your gut microbiome. Excessive fermentation of FODMAPs can disrupt this balance, leading to an overgrowth of harmful bacteria and a reduction in beneficial bacteria.

Personalized Dietary Choices: Understanding your RDA for FODMAPs allows for a more tailored approach to eating. You can make informed decisions about which foods to include in your diet and in what quantities, helping you enjoy a diverse and satisfying diet without compromising your digestive health.

How does the RDA Ring Work in FoodMarble?

The RDA Ring feature in the FoodMarble app is designed to provide a clear and visual representation of your daily FODMAP intake, offering several advantages for managing your gut health. Here’s how it works and how it benefits you:

Meal-logging: Check FODMAP Content and %RDA

As you log your meals, the FoodMarble app calculates the FODMAP content and shows the percentage of your RDA consumed. The RDA ring displays how much RDA you’ve already used and how much RDA is in the meal you’re about to log. You can easily monitor your intake throughout the day with this feature, ensuring you stay within your FODMAP budget and make informed dietary choices.

Home Screen: RDA Ring and FODMAP Breakdown

You can access the RDA Ring and the breakdown chart via the Home Screen. These features indicate whether you are within the normal RDA levels or have exceeded them and show how each meal contributes to your total daily FODMAP intake. You can also tap on any meal to see the RDA or FODMAP breakdown for specific meals.

Food Library and Recipe: Pre-meal Checks

Before eating, you can check the FODMAP content of foods in our extensive Food Library and Recipe section. RDA rings can help you plan meals within your daily allowance, making meal planning easier and more effective.

Using RDA Ring During the Reset Stage

During the Reset stage, the RDA Ring is especially helpful. By tracking your FODMAP intake, you can plan your meals to stay within the recommended levels. This helps maintain a low FODMAP diet, reducing symptoms and preparing your gut for the next stage. It becomes easier to stick to your dietary goals with the help of RDA rings.

Get Your Personalized RDA

After completing the Discovery stage, you will have a personalized RDA based on your reactions to different FODMAPs. For example, if you discover you have lactose intolerance, your RDA for lactose will be adjusted to reduce accordingly. You can now better understand your personal tolerance levels and manage your diet more effectively by selecting foods that support your digestive health and minimizing those that cause discomfort.
