  • IBS Explained: Symptoms, Causes and How to Manage It

  • IBS affects 1 in 8 people worldwide, yet many still struggle to understand it and how to manage it. In this guide, we’ll break down what IBS is, its symptoms, possible causes and solutions, including how the FoodMarble breath tester can help you take control of your digestive health.

What is IBS?

IBS, or Irritable Bowel Syndrome, is a functional gastrointestinal disorder. This means that although the digestive system appears normal structurally, it doesn’t always function as it should. Unlike other digestive diseases, IBS is diagnosed based on symptoms rather than visible damage or inflammation in the gut.
There are four subtypes of IBS, classified based on the most prominent symptom:

– IBS-D: Diarrhea predominant
– IBS-C: Constipation predominant
– IBS-M: Mixed (both diarrhea and constipation)
– IBS-U: Unclassified

What are the risk factors for IBS?

IBS often develops before middle age and is more commonly diagnosed in women. While there’s no single cause, several risk factors increase the likelihood of developing IBS:

– A family history of IBS
– A recent gastrointestinal infection
– Co-existing mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression

Common IBS Symptoms

IBS symptoms vary from person to person, but often include:

1. Changes in Bowel Habits

This may include frequent diarrhea, constipation, or a mix of both.

2. Abdominal Pain

Often caused by a sensitive gut, pain may come and go, feel sharp or dull, and typically occurs after eating.

3. Bloating & Gas

When food isn’t fully digested, gut bacteria ferment it and produce gases like hydrogen and methane, which can lead to bloating and discomfort.

Other reported symptoms include heartburn, nausea, fatigue, headaches or migraines, lowered libido and so on.

With FoodMarble, you can log all of these symptoms alongside your meals, sleep, and stress levels in the app to uncover patterns and triggers unique to you.

Managing IBS: What Are Your Options?

Treating IBS is all about personalized symptom management. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, but here are some of the most common and effective strategies:

1. Low FODMAP Diet

One of the most effective strategies for managing IBS symptoms is following a low FODMAP diet. FODMAPs are fermentable sugars that can be difficult to digest and trigger gas production in sensitive guts.

Common FODMAPs include:

– Fructose (fruits, honey)
– Lactose (dairy)
– Sorbitol (stone fruits, sugar-free gum)
– Inulin (onion, garlic, wheat)

Eliminating high-FODMAP foods can provide symptom relief for many people. However, long-term restriction can have a negative effect on the gut microbiome. That’s why we recommend finding your personal tolerance threshold.

💡 FoodMarble’s FODMAP Testing Kit lets you test your digestion of the 4 most common FODMAPs using real-time breath testing with our clinically-validated breath tester. No need to guess which food is problematic for you. Real-time insights provided by the FoodMarble app can guide you to  better gut health.

2. Understand Your Fermentation

When your gut bacteria ferment undigested food, they produce hydrogen and methane gases. These can be absorbed into your bloodstream and exhaled in your breath.

FoodMarble measures these fermented gases to help you understand what foods cause the most fermentation for you. This insight allows you to make smarter dietary choices.

3. Probiotics and Prebiotics

Introducing beneficial bacteria (probiotics) or feeding your existing good bacteria (prebiotics) may also help balance your gut. Some people find relief through fermented foods like kefir or supplements.

That said, not all probiotics work for everyone, and sometimes they can worsen symptoms. This is also why you should track your body’s reactions closely.

4. Medications

Depending on your dominant symptoms, doctors may recommend:

– Peppermint oil for spasms
– Loperamide or rifaximin for diarrhea
– Fibre supplements or laxatives for constipation
