  • Simplify Your Food Choices with FoodMarble’s Barcode Scanner

  • We want you to have a smooth journey during your FoodMarble experience, and we’re excited to introduce a new feature in our FoodMarble App – FoodScanner. This tool makes it faster and easier to pick the foods that are right for you with our barcode scanner and extensive food database.

What is FoodScanner?

The FoodScanner is a new feature in our FoodMarble app designed to streamline meal logging and enhance your dietary management. With FoodScanner, you can scan barcodes on food packaging and receive detailed info cards that include FODMAP content, the percentage of RDA consumed, and your personal reaction. It simplifies and speeds up dietary tracking, helping you stay within your RDA (recommended daily allowance) of FODMAPs. This feature is particularly beneficial for individuals managing digestive health issues such as IBS, SIBO and Food Intolerance, offering a quick and accurate way to track the foods you eat.

Recently, our foods database expanded with over 13,000 new food items aggregated from various supermarkets in key user regions, including the UK, Ireland, the US, and Canada. These additions include essential macronutrient information like dietary fiber and serving size.

How Do I Use FoodScanner to Make My FoodMarble Experience Easier?

There are two key ways to leverage the FoodScanner:

1. Log Foods Quicker and Easier with FoodScanner

If the food that I eat has a barcode, why not let the app search it for me quickly and more accurately? Simply follow the steps below:

  • Tap the “+” button on the Home Screen to log foods (both the button in the Meals section and the main “+” button at the bottom will work).
  • Tap the barcode icon on the top right corner.
  • Turn on your camera and scan the barcode on your food package.
  • And that’s it! Your food’s information card will appear and you can select your serving size and log the food.

2. Plan My Meals in Advance – Even While I’m Still in the Supermarket!

Instead of buying all kinds of foods and ingredients only to find they are high in FODMAPs I can’t digest when I get home, or standing in front of the shelves trying to figure out which ingredients might trigger my digestive symptoms, it’s so much easier to have all that info instantly as I pick up an item in the supermarket. With FoodScanner, it’s now possible. To check how much FODMAPs are in a food beforehand, you just need to:

  • Tap the “Foods” button in the bottom navigation bar, and you will go to the “Food Library.”
  • Click the barcode icon at the top right corner.
  • Scan the barcode and the information card will pop up for you to check all related details.

With this process, the foods won’t be logged in your meals, so you can easily repeat these steps to check out all the items that you pick up in the supermarket and choose the right food for your gut.

What If the Food Is Not in the Database?

Don’t worry! You can still use the FoodScanner. We will guide you to add it and estimate the FODMAP content for you. The food you add will be stored in your Food Library and when you scan it again next time, you can quickly find it and add it to your meal. The following steps will be needed to add the food item that is not in our database:

  • When seeing the pop-up of “Unknown product,” tap “Yes” and follow the guidance.
  • Insert the product name and serving size.
  • Take a photo of the ingredients text (you can crop the image to adjust).
  • Review the text extracted from your image.
  • Click “Done” and now you will get the estimated FODMAP content.

We hope that you will find this new feature useful and that it makes your journey towards better gut health easier. Get in touch if you have suggestions for the FoodScanner feature or the app in general!
