For many years now, I have been struggling with IBS. I saw several doctors, specialists even. One of them said to me straight: “you suffer from IBS. It’s nothing life threatening, however, it does cause you to lose quality of life”. She, a doctor specialised in internal diseases, was absolutely right. My abdominal pain would sometimes get so bad that I would be forced to quit whatever I would be doing at that moment, and go home, not even able to stand up straight. I never knew the cause of my pain, or my bloating.
Last year, I started to see new doctors and even had a scan of my bowel system, as I was convinced something else had to be wrong. The scan showed nothing but the severe bloating. That was it. I ordered some probiotics online, thinking it would help (thank you for many articles online on IBS -not-). It didn’t, it even made me consider going to hospital, because of extreme pains, from taking the wrong probiotics (containing something I didn’t digest).
The last doctor I saw suggested I would follow the FODMAP diet, seeing a dietician to help me through this very strict and difficult diet that lasts for weeks. I then came to the conclusion that I have problems digesting onion and garlic. Being very happy at that moment, thinking my problems would be solved, I started avoiding onion and garlic.
My pain and bloating never went away, causing me psychological difficulties, since having pain on a regular basis and not understanding why, is something difficult to comprehend. It was clear, onion and garlic were not the only problem.
